In Sons of the Forest, players can team up with up to eight friends in a cooperative experience. Even when navigating the island solo, a fixed companion appears: Kelvin. This guide centers on Kelvin, a reluctant ally who helps the player settle into a harsh new world.
Find Kelvin
The adventure begins as the protagonist, Kelvin, and a few allies reach the island. Once you arrive, take a moment to survey the damage and assess the situation. Nearby, an injured Kelvin lies on the ground.
To recruit Kelvin as a partner, assist him to his feet. This triggers a brief scene where you help Kelvin stand up. By the end of the scene, the player can interact with Kelvin and issue simple commands.
What commands can be used to control Kelvin
To issue commands, a notepad is required. The complete list of commands is shown below.
- Come after me;
- take item (give an item of clothing from inventory);
- Clear (indicate the amount of work to do);
- Take a break (rest);
- Stay (here, hidden);
- Build (bonfire, shelter, or complete building);
- Take (sticks, logs, stones) and (throw here, give it to me, follow me).
Of these options, it is recommended to begin by building a shelter for the first night. A tent can always be pitched in Sons of the Forest, but ordering Kelvin to construct a shelter will reduce the need to gather resources. This allows focusing on weapons crafting and locating essential tools such as diving gear.
There is merit in noting a feature related to a team named purify. It enables Kelvin to clear the ground within a radius of five, ten, or twenty meters. The satellite will start clearing trees and flattening the area, simplifying base construction and letting Kelvin handle the more routine tasks while attempting to diversify the player’s activities and base design.
Under the command set labeled To take, Kelvin can be instructed to collect sticks, stones, logs, or fish. Among these, fish stands out as the best option because Kelvin is a skilled fisherman. To access this command, the player must be near a body of water. When commanded to fish, Kelvin moves to the nearest water source, crouches, and begins catching fish. He will continue until given a new instruction, making him an efficient source of food.
Some glitches have been observed related to the satellite. If a log base is built and Kelvin is ordered to fetch logs, he may accidentally pull logs from a hiding place, causing the structure to collapse. A practical remedy is to order Kelvin to clear the area and focus on fishing so play remains smooth.
Is it possible to get rid of Kelvin?
For players who prefer solo exploration, there is an option to reduce Kelvin’s involvement. Use the command Take a Break to command Kelvin to rest. He remains idle, staying roughly where he was left, allowing the player to explore the island without his accompaniment. If Kelvin is bothersome, letting him rest by a stream can still prove useful later.
Should I feed Kelvin?
Feeding Kelvin is not required. He can survive by foraging berries, drinking water, and sleeping, so the player is not obligated to manage his water or food directly or share every resource. Kelvin can take care of basic needs on his own.
Can Kelvin finally die?
Kelvin can be knocked down by cannibals or mutants, but only the player can finish him off. The companion does not engage in combat effectively due to a deafness acquired during a crash and shell shock, so in combat he mainly serves as a distraction or support. If Kelvin falls, the player can pick him up; he will remain down for a while and then rise to rejoin the main character. There is usually no need for excessive worry.
