Diablo 4 presents a sprawling open world that invites hours of exploration. There is a way to move faster through grim zones by mounting your own horse. However, a mount isn’t available right away. This guide explains where to find a horse in Diablo 4 and how to unlock it for practical travel.
Diablo 4 guides
Early on, mounts aren’t accessible, even if a player reaches the capital Kyovashad. A sequence of steps must be completed before faster travel becomes possible.
This guide covers when and how to obtain the Mount: Donan’s Favor quest, how to finish it, and how to customize the horse for ongoing journeys.
When do you get a horse in Diablo 4?
You cannot obtain a horse until the start of Act 4 in Diablo 4.
During the prologue, upon arriving in Kiovashad, players receive three main missions tied to Acts 1, 2, and 3. They can be tackled in any order, though some are simpler than others. Completing all three core missions is required before advancing to Act 4.
Where can I get the horse quest in Diablo 4?
At the outset of Act 4, players reappear in Kyovashad and meet Donan at the Cathedral of Light. This happens during the Masterful Touch quest. Finishing that quest unlocks Mount: Grace of Donan, a dedicated horse quest in Diablo 4.
This occurs around level 30, but it also depends on the chosen difficulty and how many optional tasks have been completed. Side content can be skipped to accelerate access to a horse, speeding up early exploration considerably.
Speak with the equerry in Kyovashad. He stands near the bridge leading to the area where Lorath traveled west at the game’s start. After a brief chat, a pop-up explains how the mount system works and allows color customization for the horse.
Additional mounts may cost 20,000 gold. This is a steep price early on, but mounts become available across all characters within the same account.
How does the horse work in Diablo 4?
The mounted travel option significantly speeds movement compared with foot travel. It helps in activating Lilith’s Altars, evading groups of enemies, and overall closing distances quickly. Most importantly, once the Donan quest is completed, the horse remains available to all characters on the account. This makes early grinds and map traversal much smoother for new playthroughs.
To ride, press the Z key on PC or the right D-pad button on a controller. While riding, the skill bar reflects the mount’s unique abilities.
The horse features a gear system that boosts speed up to three times in quick succession. After a short cooldown, these charges regenerate one by one. With quick charges, players can push through monsters and terrain—carrying a ready attack is wise in case enemies close in.
Each class has its own driving ability that enables a rapid dismount and an immediate attack from the rider’s side.
The horse cannot die. If damage is taken while mounted, a counter fills in the UI. When it reaches its maximum, the rider is dropped and cannot remount during the cooldown period. A handy tip is to jump off before a rise or cliff to avoid filling the counter too quickly.
How do you customize a horse in Diablo 4?
The stable lets players alter the horse’s appearance and purchase cosmetic saddles and gear. These items do not increase speed or the number of charges; they purely change visuals for the mount.
If a trophy was earned for defeating the world boss Ashava during the beta, the corresponding skin can be applied to any stable once the mount is acquired.
Cosmetic items can be bought with in-game gold from stable managers in major settlements. Some items also appear in the Diablo 4 store and via the Season Battle Pass. There is a small chance horse cosmetics drop from chests, rare enemies, and world bosses.
For players who enjoy PvP, there are special mount customization options. Stable owners trade cosmetics for a PvP resource earned in PvP zones.
Quests and events can reward horse decorations as well.
How to get the Decaying Steed Mount
The Decaying Steed Mount appears when goblins spawn at random locations across the world. Luck plays a role, as goblins teleport away through portals. Players should attack the goblin to interrupt the teleport and keep their focus amid nearby monsters. Treasure goblins can drop valuable loot, including mounts, though the odds remain slim.
Defeating a Treasure Goblin can yield notable loot, including mounts, but the chance of success remains small.
