The built-in Windows Defender antivirus often acts decisively with files downloaded from the Internet. This rapid response helps guard data and devices from potential harm. When a file is trusted, users can create a list of exclusions so Defender doesn’t block it at a moment of greatest need. This guide explains how to set those exclusions.
Guides for Windows 11
How to open the Windows Security window on Windows 10/11
There are several routes to reach the required window, but two of the simplest are covered here.
First method
- Press the Windows key on the keyboard or click the Start button in the lower corner of the screen.
- Choose the Settings option, shown as a gear icon.
- Open the Updates and Security section.
- Locate the article about Windows Security and select Protection against viruses and threats.
Second method
In the system tray, found in the bottom right corner, locate the shield icon and click it once.
Add a file or folder to the exclusion list
Inside the Virus and threat protection settings section, click Settings Manager.
Scroll down to the Exceptions section and click Add or remove exclusions.
If the system requests permission to make changes, confirm with Yes. Then users can add files, folders, and even processes to be ignored. It is wise to keep third-party applications on the exclusion list as security protocols update from time to time.
To add a file or folder, select the appropriate option in the dialog that opens. All contents of the chosen folder will be excluded while the window remains open.
File types and process names must be entered manually when needed.
If necessary, the option to disable system protection entirely is available. A more detailed discussion of this is provided in a separate guide.
How to recover files deleted by antivirus
Defender can sometimes act too quickly and prevent the addition of items to the exclusion list. At times it may quarantine a safe item and present options for resolution. All items and actions are tracked in the Defense Journal, where details about each file are accessible and decisions can be made. When issues are resolved in this way, remember to add those items to the exclusions so they are not quarantined again during future scans.
