The game lets players tailor their lords when assembling a party, and this guide explains how to assemble a noble family that starts strong and stays effective from day one.
Founding a Noble Family of Lords
When looking at default settings, which often show two brothers and one wife, the game tends to assign similar traits. A leader with high command is usually a capable fighter, while the brother strong in management tends to excel in trade. The risk is a double burden for the rulers who must travel, negotiate, and manage, all at once.
The first two lords are tasked with exploring the environment to forge alliances and close profitable deals. A leader with poor manners struggles to make friends, and a ruler who is good at diplomacy may be torn between issuing orders and heading out to negotiate. Their natural strengths often lean toward combat, leaving diplomacy and trade to chance rather than strategy.
To avoid a heavy workload on any single character, a strategic approach is to pick traits that free the starting nobles to focus on one primary duty each. Let each person pursue their main role while lending a hand on less busy tasks when time allows. For example:
First brother (king): choose traits that boost social power and leadership, like Manners with a Charismatic edge, Persuasion, and a touch of Intelligence so diplomacy remains strong and quick learning stays on track. The Empath trait can help win friends, while a mild negative trait like Ugly is fairly inconsequential in practice.
Wife of the first brother: focus on Intelligence, Management, and Teaching. In the early stages she manages internal politics and absorbs new knowledge. As children appear, she takes a lead role in their upbringing. The Teaching skill, aided by Perceptive insights, becomes especially useful. Additional traits such as High Fertility and a mild Unpleasant trait can help balance family dynamics when the husband is away.
Second brother: emphasize Trade with a Forecaster perk, plus some Combat and Intelligence. His main job is to secure profitable deals and defend the realm when needed. He will spend a lot of time on the outer paths, occasionally stepping away to study new knowledge.
Each skill point is gained with age, so the older the lord, the more experience they carry. Building a family with members over 35 carries risk, so the sweet spot is around 30 years old for optimal balance of experience and adaptability.
Tip: A capable Lord Manager and a strong Lord Warrior can be recruited later in the game. It’s okay if early on a few characters aren’t at their peak in control. Every enterprise yields resources, and the manager’s main value is a productivity bonus that compounds over time.

In practice, the apparent edge often shows itself late in the game.
