Where to look for Thaya’s Necromancy in Baldur’s Gate 3

Thaya’s Necromancy Book is a quest item that unlocks extra skills and boosts several stats. It sits in Extinct Village, tucked in the basement of the pharmacy. Coordinates are 39, 382. The precise house is marked on the map for easy reference.

The target house lies to the left of the settlement’s main entrance. Enter through the double doors and step inside.

A hatch in the floor near a display case leads to the basement—you will need to use it.

The goal is a closet in the far left corner of the room. Approach it and break the left-side boxes. Doing so reveals a lever that opens a hidden passage.

The area can be explored, coffins opened, and local skeletons fought. A wooden platform is accessible as well. There is only one way the exploration can go wrong: approaching the mirror.

The mirror will begin asking questions. The correct answers are:

  1. My name is [Ваше имя].
  2. Yes, I am an ally! ally of your master.
  3. Disgusting body. Even a thousand deaths will not be enough for him.
  4. I read the doctor’s diary: he used balm to clean the wound.
  5. I need a spell that can remove this worm in my head.

If preferred, the mirror can be intimidated. Astarion may approve this approach to solving the problem.

Proceed by pulling the lever to create a shortcut to the pharmacy. A key can be picked up from the shelves on the left.

Follow the path to the right and open the grate. Be mindful of falling—there is a need to disinfect first before continuing.

The objective is to obtain Thaya’s necromancy.

Upon picking up the book, players can decide what to do with it:

  • Give to Gale;
  • Destroy it;
  • Rescue someone.

Both the first two options result in the book disappearing. It is advised to keep the book. A prerequisite to unlock its pages is a dark amethyst. Destroying the book summons three shadows, which can be a tough fight.

Where to find the dark amethyst

The dark amethyst lies near the well in the Infested Village, located to the right of the pharmacy.

Investigate the pit with a coin toss, the Investigation skill, or a careful eye, and descend. The route runs northwest through a phase spider nest. If combat isn’t ready, use a potion or an invisibility spell, or try sneaking past.

Eventually the spider queen appears, but defeating it is not mandatory. Spot the amethyst to the right and take it.

Use a scroll or the Feather Fall spell to avoid fall damage, or climb down via the left-hand vines.

Reading Thaya’s Necromancy and what can be done with the book

After securing the dark amethyst, the book can be used. Four options are available:

  • Destroy. This option is available from the start. The necromancy volume simply vanishes, and three Shadows appear to fight.
  • Give to Astarion. The book may be useful for this character, though no obvious stat boost is shown.
  • Read the book. For the best bonus, 20 Wisdom points are required. This choice grants Speak to the Dead and Forbidden Knowledge skills, plus a boost to Wisdom.
  • Take the book with you. This is the best choice if Wisdom is below 20, saving reading for later.
