WhatsApp has stopped functioning on devices running KaiOS 2.5.4 and newer. This issue was observed by Reddit users, including a report from a user named u/m-ago who noted that the messaging app failed to operate on his Nokia 6300 4G. The observation was later acknowledged by editors at FoneArena.
The problem appeared to be widespread. After WhatsApp build 2.2329.13 for KaiOS was installed, many users reported they could not log into their accounts due to an unexpected error. Attempts to revert to an earlier build, specifically 2.2329.10, did not help, because the app cross-checks the device time and app version during phone number verification, triggering a critical error.
Subsequent guidance from Messenger’s technical support indicated that moving forward, only users who had logged in before June 25, 2024 would be able to use WhatsApp on KaiOS. Even for those users, the service would be disabled in February 2025. For others, the app became unavailable. It was also stated that WhatsApp developers would no longer release updates for KaiOS.
The list of models slated to lose WhatsApp support includes JioPhone, JioPhone 2, Nokia 800 Tough, Nokia 2720 Flip, Nokia 2760 Flip, Nokia 2780 Flip, Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 8000 4G, Nokia 8110 4G, along with several Alcatel and Energizer devices. In addition, Messenger is expected to stop functioning on KaiOS 3.0.
There were earlier notes about WhatsApp features appearing in a New section with selected chats and calls.
Source notes and interventions from user communities and tech outlets have continued to document the changes, with the understanding that KaiOS device owners may need to consider upgrading to a supported platform or seeking alternative messaging options. This situation underscores the evolving device compatibility decisions made by app developers and the impact on users who rely on older feature phones for daily communication .
