Industry analysts from Wellsenn XR examined the bill of materials for Apple’s first Vision Pro mixed reality headset and concluded that the component costs exceed the retail price by more than two times. This interpretation is aligned with the reporting from My Drivers.
Estimations place the total cost of Vision Pro components at around $1,500, roughly 122,000 rubles based on the June 7, 2023 exchange rate. In comparison, the consumer-ready device carries a suggested price of $3,500, about 285,000 rubles at that time.
The highest value elements in the Vision Pro are the display assemblies, with Apple reportedly paying the manufacturer about $700 per unit. The second-most costly component is the M2 processor, priced at $120 to the seller. Following that is the proprietary R1 chip, estimated at $60.
Also significant is the $120 cost attributed to the headset’s chassis, which features carefully shaped glass and a carbon-fiber frame, among other design details. Assembly costs are cited at roughly $130 per unit.
Using the disclosed figures, My Drivers suggests the Vision Pro’s final production cost is not as inflated as some initial impressions might imply. Journalists have also noted that the Wellsenn XR listing does not account for Apple’s research and development expenditures, nor shipping costs, when estimating the cost base.
