The Grand Theft Auto VI trailer arrived earlier than planned after a leak, and it quickly surged on YouTube, earning millions of likes within hours.

The clip confirms the option to choose a female protagonist for the series for the first time in 26 years. The heroine is named Lucia, and she will be the first female voice actor in GTA. A second main character appears as a male, whose name is not shown in the trailer, though leaks identify him as Jason, with players able to switch between Lucia and Jason during missions.

In one close scene, the duo is shown as partners in a romantic moment, lying together in a bed.

According to the official press release, GTA VI unfolds in the fictional state of Leonidas, which includes the core city of Vice City, familiar from 2002’s GTA: Vice City. Details about the setting surfaced online multiple times, with a major leak confirming the location last fall.

The city is inspired by Miami and the broader Florida landscape, with the map likely drawing on real-world features from the state. While the overall size and layout remain under wraps, the city is expected to be larger than the classic Vice City, and players will encounter familiar locales from the 2002 game alongside new Florida-inspired environments.

The city is designed to be more interactive, letting players explore motels and other urban spaces with greater freedom.

Cars, strip clubs, racing

Rumors suggest the GTA VI car roster will reuse favorites from GTA V and GTA Online, complemented by fresh models rendered with heightened detail. A new airboat appears in the trailer, a vehicle not seen in prior installments.

Game entertainment includes strip clubs, nightclubs with DJs and champagne, pool parties, drag races, and a wide array of activities. The GTA open world is renowned for its breadth, and the sixth entry aims to match or exceed GTA V’s variety.

What else awaits players?

A novel vehicle, the airboat, enters the scene to traverse swamps and dodge alligators. A crocodile cameo in a restaurant scene hints at broader wildlife, including dogs, flamingos, dolphins, and sharks, with fauna possibly pulled from previous installments and beyond to capture a more immersive ecosystem.

Gameplay mechanics and wildlife systems from Red Dead Redemption 2 are expected to transfer to GTA VI. Rumors point to a dialogue system that enables players to greet, threaten, and interact with NPCs for richer immersion.

One notable shift involves weapon management. The game may drop the unlimited weapon carry and adopt a more realistic approach similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, restricting weapons to a select set worn on the back with a belt. A new feature could allow characters to bind their companions to specific roles.

The weapon wheel is expected to expand to hold everyday items such as cigarettes and medicine. Players may be able to pick up, drop, and throw weapons, as well as carry a duffel bag for storage.

There are whispers about survival elements that may require characters to eat to maintain stamina. A unique reputation system inspired by Red Dead Redemption could influence decisions and progression, potentially opening paths like becoming a police officer, a pilot, a killer, or a gang member.

The multiplayer component remains unannounced. It is not expected to be a direct continuation of GTA Online, and players might reconstruct a criminal empire in a fresh online world.

Release date

The release date for Grand Theft Auto VI remains one of the big unknowns. The year is officially set as 2025, with bets leaning toward autumn or spring launches. Delays, similar to GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, could occur.

In 2025, GTA VI is anticipated to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, likely running at 30 frames per second across platforms. The Xbox Series S performance could be a concern, although optimizations may improve outcomes as development progresses. A PC release is expected, but not guaranteed before 2026, following Rockstar Games’ typical console-first approach.

There has been no formal PC announcement yet, but previous patterns suggest a later arrival on computer systems, with a potential window aligning with past Rockstar releases. Commentary from insiders and industry sources continues to shape expectations for the game’s performance and features.
