Video hosting platform YouTube has started removing videos in which Tesla owners claim autopilot fails to recognize or stop for children, according to Boundary. Earlier, activists from the Dawn project raised questions about the driver assistance system and its ability to identify pedestrians or child-sized figures on the road.
In early August, human rights advocates argued that Tesla autopilot could struggle to distinguish child dummies from real pedestrians, presenting demonstrations of an electric car on autopilot allegedly knocking over a dummy about the height of a meter. Tesla owners responded by reviewing the assertions and filming their own road tests. In every examined instance, the car either slowed down as it approached the presence of children or passed by without incident, prompting debate about whether the demonstrations accurately reflected real driving scenarios.
Nevertheless, mainstream media soon reported that many such videos were removed because YouTube determined they violated its child safety policy and could promote potential harm. Company representatives emphasized that the platform considers recordings that threaten the emotional or physical well being of minors to be unacceptable content.
Questions like whether Tesla on Autopilot truly risks harming children arose in investor circles, with executives and analysts scrutinizing the claims and the video material associated with them. A video that had been circulating also disappeared from YouTube after scrutiny, sparking discussion about the reliability of the demonstrations and the technology involved. In several cases, observers pointed out that the demonstrations did not consistently show the system failing to recognize smaller pedestrians, and some examples suggested the autopilot would react in a cautious manner near children.
