The expert identifies two of the most common triggers for a smartphone fire. First, damage to the battery shell caused by repeated drops can compromise safety. He also notes that direct sun exposure can cause the battery to overheat and malfunction. If the battery swells and protrudes from the device housing, the phone becomes unsafe to use, since it can ignite and inflict serious burns on a person.
According to the analyst, in many fire events the phones simply smoke rather than fully ignite. Complete ignition is uncommon and typically requires a combination of adverse conditions, such as wet weather or submersion in water, particularly when the battery shell is damaged.
