Smartphone Battery Safety and Practical Guidance for North American Users

A leading industry analyst from the Mobile Research Group cautions that improper use of smartphones can lead to battery fires. In recent months, incidents have been reported in Russia, with a pattern that mirrors observations in other regions. This risk is highlighted by Radio Sputnik in its coverage.

The expert identifies two of the most common triggers for a smartphone fire. First, damage to the battery shell caused by repeated drops can compromise safety. Second, using a low-quality charger or an external power bank that pushes more power than the device can safely handle increases the chance of overheating.

He also notes that direct sun exposure can cause the battery to overheat and malfunction. If the battery swells and protrudes from the device housing, the phone becomes unsafe to use, since it can ignite and inflict serious burns on a person.

According to the analyst, in many fire events the phones simply smoke rather than fully ignite. Complete ignition is uncommon and typically requires a combination of adverse conditions, such as wet weather or submersion in water, particularly when the battery shell is damaged.

Regular battery replacement is advised, with the understanding that the battery is a consumable component. The recommendation is to replace it every two to three years. If charging performance diminishes or the device runs less efficiently, replacing the battery is suggested as a prudent step.

The situation underscores practical safety measures for users in North America and beyond, including the importance of using certified chargers, avoiding exposure to direct heat, and monitoring battery health as devices age. Information from Radio Sputnik emphasizes that keeping devices up to date and handling chargers with care can reduce the risk of battery-related incidents.
