The 2022 energy efficiency program implemented by RN-Yuganskneftegaz, part of Rosneft, delivered a substantial economic effect of 1.8 billion rubles. Rosneft’s press service, which oversees the oil giant’s subsidiaries, confirms this impact as part of the company’s broader drive toward efficiency.
Results from the energy saving initiative show RN-Yuganskneftegaz, Rosneft’s largest oil-producing entity, reduced electricity consumption by more than 426 million kilowatt-hours in 2022. In monetary terms, the savings totaled about 1.8 billion rubles, marking a 5.8% increase over the previous year. This indicates a meaningful upward trend in energy efficiency across major production assets and underscores the importance of continuous optimization within the company’s operations.
Enhancing the performance of production assets is a core pillar of Rosneft-2030, the company’s long-term strategic framework. By lowering energy use, Rosneft aims to improve overall asset productivity, extend equipment life, and reduce operating costs, all while supporting environmental stewardship and resource conservation. RN-Yuganskneftegaz stands out as a major consumer of electricity, and its teams have deployed more than 30,000 energy-saving measures that contributed to the year’s gains.
The most notable efficiency gains arose from modernizing submersible equipment used in artificial lift systems, upgrading pumping equipment for oil purification and transfer, and optimizing reservoir pressure management as well as the operating modes of various production facilities. These targeted improvements helped stabilize production while reducing energy intensity, reinforcing the company’s capacity to meet growing demand with lower energy expenditure.
Specific achievements include that over 58% of the well stock is now equipped with energy-saving electric motors, yielding savings exceeding 110 million kilowatt-hours in 2022. Additionally, the modernization of centrifugal sectional pumps to maintain reservoir pressure contributed over 17 million kilowatt-hours in savings. These mechanical and control-system upgrades illustrate how equipment-level changes compound into large-scale energy efficiency.
Further progress comes from upgrading the lighting system to LED sources across facilities. The LED retrofit alone produced more than 10 million kilowatt-hours in 2022, illustrating how even relatively small-scale changes can produce meaningful energy dividends when deployed broadly.
In tandem with these operational improvements, RN-Yuganskneftegaz completed a recertification audit to verify its energy management system’s alignment with the ISO 50001-2018 standard. The certification confirms the system’s transparency and objectivity in assessing energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, conserving natural resources, and lowering costs. This external validation reinforces the credibility of Rosneft’s energy program and its commitment to disciplined energy governance.
