The market for refurbished smartphones in Russia showed strong momentum in 2023, expanding fourfold in monetary terms and about two and a half times in volume from January to November, according to a briefing from MegaFon’s press service reported by socialbites.ca.

Samsung led the demand for refurbished devices, with sales more than doubling. Apple followed closely, posting a substantial rise in share and contributing to a notable second place in buyer preferences. Xiaomi also climbed into the top three, recording a quadruple increase in demand. The most popular models included the iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy A50, Samsung Galaxy A32, iPhone XS, iPhone 12 mini, and the Xiaomi Redmi 9A and Redmi 9C.

Industry observers noted that the refurbished segment is progressing rapidly. The average price of these devices has been climbing, encouraging more users to trade in older devices to offset the cost of newer models.

Devices renewed through the MegaFon and Yota network undergo a series of tests before they reach the shelves. When needed, non-functional components are replaced to restore usability and extend the device’s lifespan.

Earlier in 2023, the prices for the most powerful iPhone models in Russia experienced a decline in real terms, contributing to the broader appeal of refurbished options as a cost-saving alternative.
