Russian STC IT ROSA and Rutek unveil R-FON smartphone in Moscow

Two Russian tech firms, STC IT ROSA and Rutek, announced the debut of a domestic smartphone named R-FON during a presentation in Moscow. The event was covered by TASS, confirming the launch plans and product details.

The R-FON features a sizable 6.7-inch AMOLED display with FullHD+ resolution, delivering a bright, sharp visual experience for media and multitasking. Its camera array includes a 50-megapixel main sensor for high-resolution photos and a 16-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls.

Under the hood, the device is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Helio G99 processor, paired with 8 GB of RAM to support smooth performance and multi-app workflows. Storage stands at 128 GB, with the option to expand via MicroSD for additional capacity.

Durability is addressed with a Gorilla Glass 5 front and a tempered glass back, while the device weighs 189 grams, contributing to a comfortable grip and portability.

Manufacturers indicated that the R-FON would go on sale in 2024, with preload timing for purchases starting on December 18. At this stage, the price had not been disclosed.

Alongside the smartphone, the presentation highlighted ROSA Mobile, a mobile operating system developed by ROSA, forming an ecosystem designed to offer a complete set of services for everyday use.

Company representatives emphasized security as a core value. Oleg Karpitsky, head of STC IT ROSA, stated that high security for ROSA Mobile users is essential and that the operating system would initially be distributed only to trusted devices. This selective deployment is presented as a guarantee of maximum data security and controlled ecosystem access.

History notes that previous market attempts to sell Russian smartphones and tablets running the Aurora OS showed results that exceeded the manufacturer’s initial expectations, indicating growing domestic interest in homegrown tech solutions.

Industry observers are watching closely to see how R-FON and ROSA Mobile will perform in the market, particularly in the context of ongoing shifts in supply chains and consumer demand within Russia and neighboring regions. The product lineup suggests a broader strategy to establish a locally developed smartphone and software suite that emphasize security, reliability, and seamless integration of hardware and software.
