In the web interface of ChatGPT, sharing conversations begins by selecting the Share option located in the side menu of the chat list. Before a shareable link is created, users can choose to assign a display name or opt for an anonymous presentation of the chat. This setup ensures that the content can be viewed externally without exposing the user’s identity unless the sender chooses to reveal it.
Recipients who receive the link can view the entire dialogue between the user and ChatGPT as it appeared at the moment the link was generated. Access does not require a ChatGPT account; anyone with the link can open and read the conversation. If the sender is signed in to a ChatGPT account, they retain the option to resume the discussion from their own profile if they decide to continue the thread afterward.
It is important to note that the shared conversation is a fixed snapshot at the time of sharing. The link does not automatically update to reflect later edits or new messages. To share an updated version, a new link must be generated and distributed. This limitation ensures that viewers see a stable representation of the conversation rather than a live, ever-changing thread.
The sharing feature is available to users on both the free ChatGPT tier and subscribers who pay for the service when using the web interface. There is anticipation that the same capability will be integrated into the ChatGPT mobile client for iOS in the near future, expanding access across devices and enabling a seamless sharing experience across platforms.
