New Year Tech at Home: Russians Favor TV and Everyday Gadgets for Holiday Celebrations

Around one third of Russians regard the television set as the central equipment for celebrating New Year’s Eve. This insight comes from a study conducted by the retailer M.Video-Eldorado for socialbites.ca.

Televisions, cited by 38 percent of respondents, and smartphones, named by 20 percent, are viewed as the main techno heroes for the holiday. In addition, 15 percent of those surveyed highlighted kitchen appliances such as hobs and ovens. The study notes that these devices were the ones most commonly used in Russia on December 31. Yet only 10 percent of respondents emphasized that a refrigerator is indispensable to their celebrations.

Moreover, 73 percent of participants said they plan to watch holiday programs and films on their television on New Year’s Eve. Ten percent expect to use a laptop or monitor for viewing, while five percent intend to rely on a smartphone or tablet. Meanwhile, 12 percent of Russians indicated they do not plan to watch programs or films at all during the New Year period.

The majority of viewers favor Soviet and Russian cinema for holiday content, with 68 percent choosing these films. An additional 11 percent said they will watch foreign cinema, and another 10 percent will revisit popular TV series that are currently trending. Earlier reporting highlighted that an alarm clock prophecy has risen to popularity among Russians as part of New Year traditions.
