Meizu Shifts to AI: From Smartphones to an All-About-Artificial-Intelligence Ecosystem

Meizu, the well-known Chinese technology company, has shifted its strategic focus away from developing new smartphones and toward advancing artificial intelligence. Reports from GizmoChina indicate that the company is embracing an AI-centric path under a new strategy described as “All About Artificial Intelligence.”

CEO Shen Ziyu explained that Meizu is evolving from a traditional mobile device maker into a broader ecosystem builder. The company is actively expanding its capabilities in immersive technologies and has already carved out a strong position in the augmented reality space through its MYVU brand. This move aligns with Meizu’s broader ambition to create interconnected products and experiences that extend beyond phones, integrating software, hardware, and services into a cohesive user environment.

Tzuyu emphasized that the smartphone market faces sustained headwinds. He highlighted that the typical usage cycle for smartphones has lengthened significantly in recent years, now averaging around 51 months. In his view, competition among leading manufacturers resembles an arms race, with each major player pushing to outdo the others in features, performance, and ecosystem advantages. This dynamic has influenced Meizu’s decision to reallocate resources toward more durable growth areas rather than competing solely on hardware specs.

With the decision to exit the smartphone business, Meizu is committing to a deep specialization in artificial intelligence. As part of the transformation, the company plans to roll out a new operating system within the year and to introduce products that operate on this evolving platform. The shift signals a strategic bet on AI-driven software experiences, devices, and services that can be integrated across consumer and enterprise contexts.
