MegaFon has established itself as a leader in nationwide network reach and mobile data speeds, a status supported by an independent assessment from Ookla, the well-known benchmark for connectivity quality.
The results come from a broad set of measurements collected from everyday subscribers using the Speedtest app during the first half of the year. This method captures real-world performance across diverse locations, offering a comprehensive view of the mobile experience across Russia. On MegaFon’s network, the median download speed was 29.34 Mbps, while another key metric showed 9.71 Mbps for a related speed measure. In today’s market, these figures position MegaFon at or near the top for average mobile speeds experienced by users in Russia, underscoring the carrier’s ability to deliver faster downloads and smoother online activity wherever customers may be located.
Ookla’s methodology assesses availability and quality by mapping mobile service across the country in grid-sized segments of 100 by 100 meters where there is active connectivity. The aim is to gauge performance in real-life conditions, not just in idealized test environments. Across this extensive study, Ookla analyzed more than 3.2 billion metrics drawn from 2 million unique devices, reflecting a substantial amount of user-level data that helps paint a reliable picture of nationwide coverage and consistency.
Industry observers note that data usage has continued to climb over the past year, prompting operators to invest in both coverage expansion and network quality enhancements. A MegaFon technical director emphasized the ongoing focus on improving user experience. The director noted that subscribers now experience download speeds that are roughly 20 percent faster on average than those of the nearest competitor. The statement also highlighted ongoing efforts to extend network reach into regions and small towns while boosting the efficiency of current infrastructure. In practical terms, this means more reliable connectivity during commutes, better performance in rural areas, and faster access to popular apps and services regardless of location.
Historically, MegaFon has also led in the adoption and deployment of advanced voice technologies. In 2022, the company earned recognition for its leadership in VoLTE development in Russia, a technology that enables instant control and high-quality voice calls over the LTE network. The same year saw MegaFon becoming the first major operator to roll out VoWiFi nationwide, enabling subscribers to make calls and access services over Wi-Fi in addition to the cellular network. This dual emphasis on both data speed and voice clarity has positioned MegaFon as a driver of modern communication experiences, as customer expectations continue to rise with each new generation of mobile technology. As a result, users benefit from more reliable call quality in challenging environments and improved overall mobile performance as networks evolve to support a growing array of connected devices and applications.
