Attorney for IT consultant Nima Momeni has pushed back against prosecutors in San Francisco who accuse him in the April fatal stabbing of Cash App founder Bob Lee. Local coverage from the San Francisco Chronicle has reported these developments.
During a court appearance, Momeni’s lawyer, Paula Canney, indicated a defense strategy centered on elements of accident and self defense. She conveyed that there was no deliberate plan to harm and that her client did not intend to take any action, as described to reporters after the hearing.
In the same session, Canney spoke on behalf of Momeni and asserted his innocence on the murder charge. She also declined to confirm whether he would acknowledge fatally stabbing Lee, emphasizing instead that the case would unfold in court.
At present, Momeni remains in custody ahead of trial. Canney did not disclose procedural details from the courtroom and criticized aspects of the police investigation while reserving judgment on specifics of the case.
In May, reports from The Wall Street Journal, based on unnamed sources and court documents, suggested a personal connection between the two men involved. The report claimed that Lee and Momeni’s sister were involved in an affair and that an argument occurred at a residence where a party took place, culminating in Lee being found injured after a confrontation with the other party, described as Momeni, who had arrived to collect his sister and was intoxicated at the time.
Bob Lee, aged 43, is described as a prominent figure in the technology sector. The entrepreneur played a key role in the creation of Cash App and Square and is recognized as a Java developer who contributed to the Android operating system’s early development. His death occurred on a spring night in downtown San Francisco after a knife assault, one that authorities have treated as a fatal incident amid ongoing investigations.
