Bill Gates, a co founder of Microsoft, described the OpenAI GPT model as the most transformative achievement in technology over the past half century. He voiced these thoughts in a personal speech shared with readers of his blog.
“The experience was overwhelming. I realized I was witnessing the most significant leap in technology since the advent of the graphical user interface,” the billionaire remarked.
Gates compared conversing with an artificial intelligence chatbot to the moment he first encountered the modern desktop environment in the early days of personal computing. Before that shift, many people interacted with computers primarily through command lines, and the introduction of graphical design on Windows reshaped everyday work and play.
He framed the rise of artificial intelligence as a milestone comparable to the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the internet, and the mobile phone. In his view, AI will alter patterns of work, study, travel, healthcare, and communication, touching nearly every facet of daily life.
According to Gates, whole industries will pivot as they integrate AI capabilities, and the extent of that transformation will vary by how effectively organizations adopt and apply the technology.
Gates also remarked on the potential of intelligent chatbots and similar AI tools, stressing their power to reframe everyday tasks and long-term planning. He asserted that this technology could yield a markedly improved world, provided it is guided by thoughtful development and responsible use.
In his assessment, the emergence of AI marks a turning point that will steer future business strategies, educational approaches, medical practices, and communications in Canada, the United States, and beyond. The focus, he noted, should be on leveraging AI to augment human capabilities while maintaining ethical standards and safeguarding privacy and security for all users.
