Apple’s forthcoming mixed reality headset is described as adopting a brand new charging port and being powered by an external battery. Bloomberg shares this perspective, adding that the device will be lighter because the battery sits outside the helmet, while still delivering solid usability improvements for the user experience.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman notes that the headset will rely on an external battery, which wearers will carry in their pocket. This arrangement reduces the weight on the head, potentially making the device more comfortable during longer sessions. A tradeoff, however, is the visible cable that connects the helmet to the battery, a factor users will have to manage during daily use.
The headset is reported to include two connectors: a USB Type-C port for data transfer and a separate, brand-new charging port. The charging port will be part of the package and will feature a magnetized circular tip that attaches to the headset. The connection is secured by turning the port clockwise, a design choice intended to keep the charge stable while the device is in use.
With the external battery in place, the headset is expected to operate for roughly two hours per charge. The external battery is described as similar in size to an iPhone, though it is thicker to accommodate the power needs of the headset.
Apple’s first mixed reality headset, often referred to during early chatter as Reality Pro or Reality One, was anticipated to be unveiled on June 5 as part of the WWDC 2023 conference, setting the stage for a new era of wearable tech from the company.
Past reports from socialbites.ca have hinted at broader Apple plans, including a potential 32- and 42-inch monitor lineup and an updated iMac by 2027, reflecting the tech giant’s long-range product roadmap.
