Microsoft is planning to change its security protocols in response to the recent failed CrowdStrike software update that disrupted systems worldwide. reports edition 9to5mac.
Windows Vice President John Cable has emphasized the importance of “end-to-end resiliency” and security innovation. As part of this strategy, Microsoft plans to restrict access to the kernel, just as Apple does, to protect against similar vulnerabilities.
While these changes will be gradual, they represent a significant shift in Microsoft’s approach to securing the Windows ecosystem. The goal is to strengthen security and prevent new disasters.
“Examples of innovation include the recently announced VBS zones, which provide an isolated computing environment that does not require kernel-mode drivers to be protected from unauthorized access, and Microsoft Azure Certificate Services, which can help determine the security level of the boot path. These examples embrace modern zero-trust approaches and show what can be done to encourage development practices that do not rely on kernel access,” Cable said.
