MacStories co-author and Magic Rays of Light Podcast co-host Sigmund Judge conducted an experiment in which he turned the iPad Pro into a portable version of Apple TV. Detailed experience described in a new article.
Judge modified the 3rd generation Apple TV 4K using the USB-C Modkit for AppleTV (2022). This set of mods allows you to replace the power port on your Apple TV with USB-C, allowing you to use it as an input signal receiver.
Judge split one port into several ports using a USB-C hub that connects to the USB-C port on the 11-inch iPad Pro. Thus, the console was powered by the tablet. The Apple TV’s HDMI port was connected to an HDMI splitter, which eliminates issues with preserving digital content, and then connected to an Elgato 4K X video capture card.
This entire design connects seamlessly to the Magic Keyboard. As a result, the tablet displays the entire Apple TV interface and works as a full-fledged TV set-top box with a screen. Thanks to this invention, users can now take their home cinema wherever they go.
