The power of the yet-to-be-announced PlayStation 5 Pro will most likely not be enough to run all new video games with a constant frame rate of 60 FPS. In this respect reports The Wccftech publication cites analysis from Digital Foundry technical experts Richard Ledbetter, Alexander Battaglia, and John Linneman.
Unlike the PlayStation 4 Pro, the new PlayStation 5 Pro will not receive a double increase in processing units (CUs), and the increased clock speed of the existing CUs will not allow the FPS to be doubled. Consistent VRAM and RAM bandwidth will also be a limiting factor.
According to rumors, the real performance increase in PlayStation 5 Pro will be provided by the upgrade technology developed by Sony together with AMD. Digital Foundry also expects improvements in the performance of ray tracing technology with the hardware upgrade. It will probably be used more often in games.
Not much is known about Sony and AMD’s new upscaling algorithm. Judging by the patents, the companies are working on a new version of “checkerboard” rendering that would allow increasing the resolution of individual image parts.
It is not known exactly when the PlayStation 5 Pro will be released. Digital Foundry believes this will happen in the second half of 2024.
