Lawmakers in the US state of Florida have introduced a bill that would ban the state’s residents under the age of 16 from registering on any social networks. This was reported by portal Tech Xplore, with reference to data from the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

According to the initiative’s authors, it is designed to protect children’s mental health from Internet addiction and other dangers, including online bullying, harassment and suicidality.

The bill was approved by the state Senate and sent back to the Florida House of Representatives; Here he received overwhelming support: 107 votes in favor and only 7 against.

The decision now must be approved by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The head of state has previously expressed support for such initiatives, but also said parents should reserve the right to allow their children to use online platforms.

If approved, social media companies would have to block Florida teens’ existing accounts and ban them from creating new accounts until their 16th birthday.
