Russian electronics manufacturer Aquarius has begun developing its own operating system based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). In this respect reports publication “Kommersant” (“Kommersant”).
According to Kommersant, Aquarius will install the operating system on branded smartphones and tablets. To receive preference in government procurement, the company plans to include its platform in the domestic software registry of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation.
There are currently two AOSP-based mobile operating systems in the domestic software registry, developed by Yadro and Red Soft companies. In total, it includes six software platforms for smartphones and tablets.
Experts interviewed by Kommersant believe that soon the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation will have to limit the registration of mobile operating systems in the registry. It is believed that even the current number of operating systems is too large for the Russian smartphone market. Allegedly, companies are trying to take advantage of the ministry’s regulations and gain financial benefit from being included in the registry.
Additionally, AOSP is potentially dangerous because it is controlled by the American company Google and may contain vulnerabilities that could benefit the United States.
