A ransomware virus is a malicious program that searches for and encrypts information valuable to a user or company. Encrypted files cannot be used. Ransomware operators and hackers demand monetary ransom from attacked individuals or companies to restore their functionality.
The most frequently reported attacks in 2023 were against the public sector. This trend continues for the second year in a row. IT companies are also among the most attacked victims, but in 2023 the dynamics are positive: the number of incidents in this area decreased by 30%. Social institutions (universities, hospitals, schools and more) are also at risk of being attacked by ransomware hackers: in 2023, they were attacked 30% more often than in 2022.
