The organizers of The Game Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the gaming industry, published the list of candidates for the 2023 victory on November 13. In the “Best eSports Team” category, Russia-Ukraine team Team Spirit was not among the competitors.
At the same time, as DTF noted, Team Spirit has many reasons to be on the shortlist. The team’s most significant success in 2023 was their victory in The International, the largest annual Dota 2 tournament. Team Spirit also won the Riyadh Masters 2023 tournament with a prize pool of $15 million and took first place in DreamLeague Season 21.
The esports community found the decision of The Game Awards organizers strange. This seems particularly incomprehensible given that The International was shortlisted in the “Best Esports Event” category, and the Gaimin Gladiators team that lost in the final of that tournament claimed to be the “Best Esports Team”.
