According to Mojang, the game has surpassed 300 million copies sold across platforms. That’s 115 million more than its closest rival, Grand Theft Auto V.
Minecraft sales have increased by 26% in the last two and a half years. So in April 2021, Mojang announced that the game had sold 238 million copies in that period. Thus, another 62 million copies of the game were sold during this time.
Minecraft will be 15 years old next year. Mojang plans to hold various events and updates to celebrate this anniversary throughout 2024.
Minecraft is a sandbox computer game created by Swedish programmer Markus Persson and first published by his studio Mojang AB in 2009. Five years later, Microsoft acquired the rights to Minecraft together with studio Mojang AB for $2.5 billion.
