In GSMA’s annual State of the Mobile Internet report reportedIt was stated that the number of smartphone owners in the world reached 4.3 billion people. This is approximately 55% of the Earth’s total population.
According to the research, 4.6 billion people are internet users and 4 billion of them connect to the internet using smartphones. The remaining 600 million people use normal phones to access the internet.
Despite the impressive figures, approximately 3.4 billion people still lack internet access, despite 92% of the world’s population living within cellular coverage areas. Among those without internet access, 59% of the Black African population and 52% of the South Asian population are cited.
There are also significant differences in connection quality and speed depending on the region. For example, in the US, Pacific Rim and East Asia, 69% of smartphone users have access to 4G networks, while in Africa and the Middle East the majority of users primarily use third-generation networks that are outdated by today’s standards.
