The scammers have developed a new scheme to deceive Russian bank customers with the help of a myth about the replacement of social cards. About this RBC said Dmitry Revyakin, Head of the Department for Protection of Corporate Interests at VTB Bank.
Attackers call landlines and pretend to be social workers, then convince bank customers that they need to update their social card; this may be the same for all beneficiaries or it may be specific for students, retirees and other categories of citizens. Also, a social card can be combined with a bank card.
If a scammer agrees to renew his social card, he is asked to provide his mobile number to receive an SMS code about the readiness of the new card. However, this code is actually for logging into internet banking.
Then the criminals try to find out from the client the number and code of the card, which is also necessary to access the bank’s personal account. If they succeed, they steal money from the customer’s account.
“Often, former customers suffer from such calls, so in order to protect yourself from such threats, you should always check information received from strangers and not disclose confidential data to anyone on the phone,” Revyakin said. He also recommended that you carefully read the messages that come after such calls – they always indicate the details and purpose of the operation. If the SMS comes from the bank, you should call the bank yourself or clarify the details in the contact center or customer service office.
