Last year’s drama “Conclave”, director Edward Berger, collected many critics prizes, received an Oscar for the best adaptive script and demonstrated an excellent cash register. In the light of the death of the Pope Francis (Francis) and the approaching conclave, where the next Pontiff will be chosen, the film experienced an unprecedented wave of popularity last week: the views of the films have increased by 283%. We tell you why you should also look at the ‘conclave’ if you have not had time to do this.

Although the conclave tells a fictional story with fictional characters, the film immerses the viewer in a rather authentic vision on how the elections of the new head of the Catholic Church take place. The main character of the photo is the dean of the Collegium of the Cardinals Thomas Lawrence performed by Ralph Fiennes. He gets a difficult task – to prepare the voice procedure for the next father after the death of the previous one. As many know, the debate around the best candidate can last for many days, and all this period the cardinals cannot leave the Sistine Chapel, as well as the closed complex of the Domus of St. Marta, where they rest at night.
What role of Raifa fins do you remember the most?

It is expected that 108 cardinals who have been locked together cannot easily reach a common agreement. Among them, several favorites have been called on the Holy Throne. So Lawrence supports his friend Aldo Bellini, who leads a group of priests of liberal views. It is played by Stanley Tucci. The supporters of Bellini believe that the church should be modernized and must be as inclined as possible to remain relevant. These views are of course not divided by traditionalists, led by Goffredo Tedesko, who threatens to cancel many reforms of the past decades.
In addition to Bellini and Tedesko, Nigerian Joshua Adaemi, who has real opportunities to become the first black father, and relatively liberal cardinal from Canada, Joseph are also shaking at the race. And the fifth unexpected candidate becomes an unknown archbishop of Afghanistan Vincent Benitest.

As the plot develops, the struggle between applicants gains strength and Lawrence partially absorbs a detective role, which tries to identify all skeletons in the cupboards of the brothers in faith. There are plenty: even the most apparent trust cardinals are inhibited by serious secrets. The intrigues reach such a scale that at some point Lawrence must immediately claim the function of dad. Otherwise the throne becomes a potentially unworthy representative of the church. The problem is that the character of Raifa fins is completely not interested in the rank of Supreme Pontiff. Moreover, he experiences a crisis of faith and dreams of going to monks.

Despite the fact that there are no action scenes in the conclave, and the heroes do not risk their lives directly, the film turned out to be as intense as possible. Because the bets are extremely high. Yes, Dad’s choice is not a matter of literal life and death for characters, but everyone understands how important it is that the leader of one of the greatest religious movements becomes a person who really deserves this.
And nobody understands this as well as Lawrence. Raif Vinnen flawlessly played the role of the leader of the conclave, which is fully aware of all the responsibility that fell on his shoulders. At first sight of the actor you can read the not easy internal conflict of the hero: at the same time he wants to escape from everything that happens as far as possible, but at the same time he is configured to bring the work to the end. Lawrence still believes in God, but he doubts so much in the dogma of the church that he doesn’t even dare to pray. And this is a serious problem for every spiritual leader.

The “conclave” not only catches with active intrigues and a stunning Faines game, but also an atmosphere. The film lifts the veil and enables you to view that part of the lives of the Catholic clergy, which is usually hidden from most people. Details of ceremonies, costumes and interiors are recreated with respectful attention to the details. Yes, and imposes the conclusion process in itself: locking the cardinals, voice conditions, burning ballot papers, insulation of the outside world.
Regarding the shortcomings, the film clearly follows a rather serious problem – superficially revealed secondary heroes. The plot is fully held on the person of Lawrence and the film itself – respectively, at the game of fins. Other actors are not missing scenes to properly convey the ambiguous characters of the characters. The story jumps from the cardinal to the cardinal, as if Lawrence is a player who tries to quickly go through all the bosses in the video game.

“Conclave” is not only a tense drama about faith and doubts, but also a unique opportunity to see at least about how one of the most intriguing closed processes in the world. Of course the plot was invented, but the importance of the event itself is transferred as successfully as possible.
Who knows – perhaps, behind the real walls of the Sistine Chapel in the coming weeks, his own, no less dramatic story about choosing a new pope will unfold.
