Why is beer necessary at Manor Lords?
After you complete the initial implementation for the future city, you don’t have to worry about the happiness of your family. It is enough to provide them with food, water from a well and a wooden shelter instead of a tent. Over time, if you are developed enough, you will have to provide the residents with beer to raise your homes to the third level of prosperity and raise the status of the village to a small village.
When Manor Lords was released in Early Access, beer production involved most stages of processing, which can be difficult for unprepared players:
- grow barley on a farm;
- build a malting house and add workers there;
- turn a home (2 levels) into a factory by adding a brewery;
- have a tavern with bartenders.
Maintaining the tavern’s beer supply is a very intensive process, involving the warehouse families and the bartenders, both of whom must be balanced. If there are fewer of the former, they won’t have time to ship; if there are fewer of the latter, they won’t have time to serve the beer to visitors. Let’s look at each step.
How do you make beer in Manor Lords?
Growing barley is no different from growing other crops. You need to find a suitable place on the map for a particular crop, green is best, yellow is acceptable and divide several fields. Since you’ll be farming much sooner than making beer, you don’t have to worry about growing barley.
Manor Lords takes into account the fatigue of the land resulting from continually growing the same crop. And a suitable location is not a guarantee of results, because for many years it will not be possible to harvest an excellent barley crop. You will have to leave the field “fallow” so that the land “recovers its strength,” or plant it with another crop.
It turns out that in 2-3 years, while the player develops the city, establishes an industrial base and establishes trade, he will still have time to convert one or more fields to the cultivation of barley. We recommend dividing five large fields and recruiting more farmers to maintain them, rather than splitting the fields into small plots. Crop rotation will grow barley one way or another. The process of producing beer at the beginning of the game does not require large amounts of grains in the barn.
To turn barley into malt, you need to build a malting house. It will be 1 unit. barley in 1 unit. malt. We recommend building a malting house halfway between your barley fields and future home breweries. This will shorten logistics time. Over time you may need two or even four maltings, so leave some room for that.
In addition to unlocking second-level homes, the player also unlocks many new buildings for these homes. One of them is a brewery. Reliably supplying residents with at least 2 breweries. Remember that turning a house into a brewery turns all the families living there into artisans and excludes them from free families.
Important: Breweries receive malt from malthouses and deliver beer to the warehouse. That is, beer itself is just a product; it is stored in a warehouse in your city and does not automatically arrive at the tavern.
The tavern is the only place where beer is used for its intended purpose. It will take at least one family to distribute the beer throughout the city, but two are better. In addition, with a poor city layout with a minimum of intersections, houses even close to the tavern may not cover the need for alcohol; they simply will not be visible to the tavern.
If you don’t have fertile land to grow barley (or you just don’t want to), you’ll have to set up a trade route. As your town grows, you’ll need to add more barley fields and maybe even a second tavern.
How do I import beer into Manor Lords?
If, upon starting a new game of Manor Lords, the player finds himself in a region with terrible barley fertility. In this case, you will have to make a lot of extra efforts to cover this shortcoming.
However, it is better and easier to import beer ingredients through trade. For example, buy barley and process it. It is also worth considering that importing the ingredients for beer is very expensive, so the player must set up a healthy export business to offset these costs. The idea is to create a large stock of all the necessary products.
A factoria (trading post) allows you to import and export goods through traveling merchants, and you can set limits on import and export transactions. However, we have described other details about trading in a separate guide. Here we emphasize that you need to switch to the “Trade” tab, select the Factory, open the raw materials section, look for barley there and set the volumes you need.
Selling or buying beer requires setting up a trade route. You will have to spend the wealth of the region, but this is the only way a traveling trader will visit your trading post.
