The Freestar Collective is another major faction Starfield, whose members you encounter while completing story missions. Like the United Colonies, the Rangers spread their influence across several star systems. In this guide, we will describe a detailed overview of all the faction’s missions and also help you make the right decisions.

How to start the Freestar Collective quest chain in Starfield. Job disappeared
You will meet the Space Rangers during the story quest “Empty Nest”. Immediately at the same time the task “Wrong work” begins. In it you meet Marshal Daniel Blake. This will happen on the planet Aquila of the Cheyenne system.

If you complete the mission after completing the main story, you can choose ‘Starborn’ in the dialogue with the city guard. You can skip the dialogue and immediately run to the marshal.

After talking to Daniel, interact with the console next to the bank door and talk to the robbers. There will be several options available here to convince them to surrender. If the first attempt doesn’t work, you can try again and also try using one of the unlocked skills.
In any case, we recommend avoiding bloodshed. If it doesn’t work, save first and load the last saved version. Return to the ranger and collect your reward (8200 credits and 150 experience).

Go to Ranger HQ and meet Emma Wilcox. She will offer you to pass a small test – you need to take one of the orders at the terminal. There are four missions available here, but you can choose one. We chose the quest ‘Kill the Captain of All Laws on Vesta’.

Kill the Outlaw Captain on Vesta
Travel to the Lunara system and land the spaceship at the Abandoned Research Base on the planet Vesta. Take the elevator to the top floor of the building, where several groups of enemies will be waiting. The bandit leader you need to take down is a dozen levels higher than you, so we recommend that you take a fast-firing and powerful weapon to take him out.

After completing the assignment, return to Emma and receive your reward. She will take you to the Marshal, who will give the player an assistant badge, faction weapons and uniforms. But the task won’t end there.

Visit Wagoner Farm
According to the plot, you need to investigate the case of the peasants – fly to Montara’s Moon and listen to Mikaela. Then you have to track down the criminals. Markers will appear on the map and all you have to do is follow them and destroy local mutants at the same time. Eventually you will find yourself on the cliff where the bandits have settled. Prepare for battle in advance, as the leader does not agree to be arrested.
Search the corpse’s pockets and read the note on the tablet: ‘Job done.’ Show the tablet to your supervisor and return to the farmer. The quest is completed and you receive 250 experience and 11,300 credits.

Where hope is built
When speaking to the marshal, show the tablet you received so that the task is updated. Now you need to get into the orbit of the planet Polvo. Near the ranger station you will see the destroyed ship Nia Kalu. Climb aboard and talk to the captain. Help repair the ship – this requires interaction with three interactive objects.
The girl will tell you where the criminals’ ships are hiding. Follow the orbit of the planet Miatha and take out several low-level ships. If your ship is not powerful enough, purchase repair kits for the ship before the battle and save your progress.

Land on the planet Polvo, go to the Hope Tech building and meet the director, Ron Hope. The task is completed and you receive 11,300 credits and 250 experience points.
Shadows in neon
Jump to Neon in the Volii system. Here you will meet a man named Jaylen. Follow him to Billy Clayton and listen to the man’s story. Use persuasion to get information about the spaceship thief. If you fail the test, you can use diplomacy (if you have the right skill).

If this doesn’t work, you’ll have to visit the loan shark and convince him to write off Billy’s debt. This can, as always, be done in several ways. We didn’t pass the sentencing and we didn’t want to part with four thousand credits, so we just killed everyone in the building. On the way out you will also have to kill the guard.
After you complete this part of the quest, head to the bar. In a conversation with Grace, you can use intimidation or persuasion – it doesn’t matter. However, you need to get information from the girl. An encrypted tablet will be added to your inventory.

Give the tablet with the data to the technician at the ranger base and report everything to the marshal. You receive 11,300 credits and 250 experience points. After this, two missions will become available in your task log at the same time. You can start doing them in any order.
Surgical attack
Travel to the star station orbiting the planet Dalvik in the Narion star system. Dock at the clinic and look for a ranger named Ben. He will take you to Ari Miller. Wait for the man to check the information about the criminal’s name, after which you can talk to several patients.

Even if you don’t get any additional information from them, return to the hall and run to Dr. Titus Cassidy. Here you will also have to take a persuasion test, but if you have brought your “Medicine” skill to at least the second level, you can gain access to the VIP sector without much difficulty.

After receiving the key card, follow the desired sector. There will be a single tower here – destroy it and investigate the room. There are several mines in there, so throw a grenade in first to activate them.

On the table to the left of the sofa, take the tablet that says ‘Urgent – read immediately’.

From the text, the player learns that the patient went to an abandoned asteroid mine orbiting the planet Bonner in the Sakharov system. Dock at the station and go forward to the closed red pressure door. Small mutants will also appear here.

To open the door, shoot the yellow bars. The mechanics may not be obvious, as you won’t encounter such doors throughout the story missions.

This takes you to a multi-level cave with several elevators and passageways. How exactly you get to the marker is up to you. Eventually you end up in a large room with a control tower, the entrance to which is closed with a pressure door. Destroy the bars and fight the fugitive, after which you can talk to her or kill her.
Give the resulting tablet to the technician at the ranger base – the quest will end. You will receive the standard reward of 11,300 credits and 350 experience.
On the run
This quest takes you to the Porrima system on the planet Porrima III. Land at the Red Mile Casino and find Ranger Autumn McMillan. After speaking with Nephrite, contact May and tell her that you would like to work for the person you are looking for. Then agree to take the test, the so-called “Race”.

Advice: On the second floor in one of the rooms you will find contraband under the bed. There will be a lot of blood in this room – you will find it soon.
When the door opens, head to the elevator and prepare to encounter a large number of high-level monsters. Mutants have quite a few hit points, so you should bring some powerful weapons.

Your task is to climb the hill and get to the button. We warn you that you have to return the same way, but on the way back there will be more mutants. However, it is not necessary to fight them at all: if you have improved the skill “Training using Boost Pack” and also have at least a balanced boost pack equipped, you can easily use the terrain and slide down with this device.
Advice: On the way back you may encounter a ballistic weapons specialist. This isn’t the best companion in Starfield, but hiring him will cost you very little.

Receive information from May and go to the planet Codos. The ship Fortuna is waiting for you here, with a dozen criminals on board. They won’t be hostile at first, but things can change depending on your decisions.

You can choose to kill Marco and his entire entourage or accept 2500 credits and a tablet with information. With the first option you will also receive Marco’s key card and you can inspect the safe and his room. But we note that there are no significant values here.
Give the tablet with the data to the codebreaker and complete the task. The reward is standard: 350 experience and 11,300 credits.
First to fight, first to die
Talk to the rangers and then go to the planet Arcturus II in the Arcturus system. Upon arrival in orbit, you will be greeted by several First ships. There will be three waves of 2-4 ships in total, so prepare for battle in advance.

After destroying the fleet, land the ship and enter the abandoned fur factory. The dungeon consists of several large locations. A large number of enemies await in each of them. The final “boss” will be Paxton Hull. The character is armed with a grenade launcher, so we advise you not to stand in one place and move constantly.

Once you neutralize him, you can talk to the man and find out who the customer really is. Note that Paxton will become hostile immediately after the conversation, even if you don’t want to kill him. We’ll have to fight him again. If you manage to knock the weapon out of the enemy’s hands (you need to make him fall to his knees), the enemy will run away from you without a gun in his hands, because he simply does not know how to attack in close -combat.
Once you get rid of it, you will receive 250 experience and 14,400 credits. The chain’s final quest will begin.
The Hammer falls. Kill Ron Hope or accept a bribe?
Return to Hope Tech and interact with the director. Show him the tablet with the debt certificate and then make a choice:
- Try to arrest. Ron Hope will order security to kill you, a shootout will begin;
- Accept a reward (bribe). You receive 20,000 credits each time, and with a higher level of the ‘Negotiation’ skill, 50,000 each. At the same time, you will not be able to tell the marshal the truth, because the hero will automatically lie to him;
- Kill. Everything described in the first paragraph will be repeated.
In fact, the death of Ron Hope will not bring any major changes (at least at this stage), but you will lose a good bonus of 20 or 50 thousand credits. Yes, the Rangers will discover the truth, but this will still end the faction mission series. So everyone will decide for themselves what he or she is going to do.

Also note that his assistant Birgit will be unhappy after Ron Hope’s murder. She will share her thoughts and say that the organization will have to look for a new manager.
Go back to the Marshal and tell him what happened. As we already wrote, the available answer options depend on your choice. Below we have provided screenshots: in the first one Rown Hope was killed and in the second we accepted the bribe.
In any case, Daniel will offer you to become a full member of the faction. If you agree, you will receive a ranger badge, ranger equipment and boost pack, as well as 150 experience points and 18,800 credits.
