The toothpicks people use to remove food particles from between their teeth can cause real trouble when they aren’t used correctly. The chief physician at Megastom clinic, Vladimir Losev, spoke with socialbites.ca about this risk.

He warned that a toothpick can injure the gums and potentially spread infection, especially when someone assumes it is a disposable one-time tool and repeats its use. Losev shared that some patients come into his clinic with a habit of saving floss and toothpicks and then reusing them after the first use, left on a table or within reach.

According to the dentist, this practice is dangerous and can trigger localized gum inflammation after an injury and even stomatitis. He noted that he has treated patients who have had splinters from wooden toothpicks lodged in the gums.

People often use toothpicks for extended periods, and over time the wood can soften or break under saliva. A splinter can lead to purulent gum inflammation and other complications, Losev warned.

Losev emphasized that when the mouth is healthy, rinsing with a suitable mouthwash can help remove food particles between teeth. However, if incidents occur frequently and additional methods are needed to clear debris from the interdental spaces and periodontal pockets, it could indicate periodontitis, a condition that may contribute to tooth loss later on.

The discussion also touched on how one common habit can reflect broader dental health issues, and the importance of recognizing warning signs rather than relying on temporary fixes. Proper care and professional guidance are essential for maintaining a healthy smile and preventing more serious problems down the line.
