New survey findings shed light on how social media shapes self-perception among Russians. Nearly one in three users edits their photos before posting, and about 16 percent report self-esteem concerns amplified by online platforms. These insights come from the Take Charge! initiative, referenced by socialbites.ca through the service’s data collection.

A large share of respondents stated they do not rely on photo retouching apps. Yet a portion of Russians still feels less attractive or successful because of social networks, while some see blogs as a portal to present their best selves. The data suggests a nuanced relationship with online images, where personal presentation competes with plain authenticity.

About 22 percent admitted that posts accruing many likes provided a momentary boost, while 20 percent place value on reactions from friends and family above others. Analysts point out that comments under posts helped only 6 percent cope with insecurities, indicating that social feedback has a limited, uneven effect on mood for most participants. These reactions underscore the mixed role that digital praise plays in resilience.

When asked, “Have you ever experienced complexes after examining social networks?” the vast majority of Russians responded in the negative, suggesting that a sizeable share does not see their online experience as a source of personal distress.

Only about one quarter acknowledged that the internet sometimes introduces complexes, while 7 percent reported frequent feelings of insecurity after scrolling through social networks. Experts emphasize that while online content can stir emotions, it is not a universal impact, and individual experiences vary widely across age groups and online habits.

Researchers also note that external factors, including environmental and seasonal influences in November, were linked to negative mood among some users. The findings highlight how online life intersects with real-world conditions, shaping daily well-being in a way that goes beyond the screen.
