Beauty tips about the risks of overdoing enamel on the feet

Painted toenails are a common sight, especially as summer arrives and open footwear returns. They can enhance the look of the feet and serve as a fashion accessory. Yet, as noted by the Valencia Community Official College of Podiatrists, excessive nail polish use may lead to fungal infections, cracking, or peeling of the nails.

“When people notice rough nails or a yellow tint, they often try to hide the problem with another coat of polish. That choice can worsen the issue by masking it while the underlying condition continues to develop,” warned Alfredo Martinez, president of ICOPCV. The aim isn’t to deny cosmetic improvement but to address health concerns first.

Home steps to strengthen weak and brittle nails

In light of these concerns, the expert outlined four essential practices to protect nail health:

Keep nails allowing them to breathe. It is wise to take breaks between coats of enamel and consider a non-pigmented nail product for a period. Allow the feet to stay bare when possible. As the seasons shift and people wear more closed footwear, it becomes important to remove nail polish, whether temporary, fixed, or gel, so the nails can breathe and receive nourishment during the colder months.

Watch the expiration dates. Nail polishes lose their effectiveness after 12 months from opening. Beyond this window, the product may deteriorate, potentially impacting nail health.

Choose acetone-free remover options. These products tend to be gentler on nails and surrounding skin compared to traditional removers.

Avoid cutting or removing cuticles from the feet. Foot cuticles perform protective roles similar to those on hands, and removing them can weaken natural defenses.

The simplest natural approach to show off beautiful feet without calluses

Healthy nails start with routine care and mindful product use. Regular cleansing, gentle filing, and moisture help preserve strength. When nails feel fragile, a brief pause from polish gives the nails space to recover. For people balancing fashion with foot health, selecting breathable footwear and giving nails time to recover between polish sessions can make a noticeable difference. It is useful to consult a podiatrist or healthcare professional about persistent nail changes that do not improve with basic care. This guidance aligns with recommendations from respected podiatry organizations and is supported by healthcare professionals who focus on preventive foot care for adults and athletes in North America.
