Latest Survey Reveals Russia’s Most Popular Cat Breeds

The Scottish Fold emerges as the leading cat breed among Russia’s pet households, according to a study acquired by socialbites.ca from the Lapka pet care service. This finding reflects a broader picture of how Russians relate to felines and which breeds capture the public imagination.

In a survey involving 35 thousand participants, more than half of the cat guardians in Russia report owning pets with no specific breed. About 45 percent live with purebred cats, with a notable trend toward female cats among this group. The data highlight a diverse landscape in which mixed-breed cats are common, yet several purebreeds stand out for their popularity.

The top breed among Russians is the Scottish Fold, chosen by 7 percent of respondents. Following close behind is the British Shorthair, with 5 percent. Maine Coon comes in third at 4 percent, while Sphynx cats are favored by 3 percent. Bengal cats attract 2 percent of respondents. Rounding out the list of the most preferred breeds are Scottish Straight, Don Sphynx, Siberian, Abyssinian, and Thai cats, collectively representing a broad spectrum of owner tastes and cat personalities.

The study also identifies several breeds that are considered relatively rare. Among them are the Sokoke, Ural Rex, Karelian Bobtail, American Polydactyl, Minskin, Ragamuffin, and Kanaani, each cited as part of Russia’s rich tapestry of feline choices.

For dog owners, the survey paints a parallel picture. About 73 percent keep purebred dogs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi leads the pack with 6 percent of households reporting this breed. Tied for second place are Chihuahua and French Bulldog at 5 percent each. The Pomeranian Spitz and the Yorkshire Terrier each account for 4 percent, with additional popularity shown by Jack Russell Terrier, Shiba Inu, Siberian Husky, Labrador Retriever, and Beagle in the broader top ten.

Earlier coverage noted developments in veterinary science, such as ongoing work toward vaccines that could help reduce dog allergies, signaling continued advances in pet health and welfare that are of interest to owners and professionals alike.
