Recent data reveal that a large share of Russian women express a preference for marrying an IT professional. The study highlights that this sentiment is especially common among younger women in major urban centers such as Moscow, St. Petersburg, and in cities including Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk. The information comes from Informatics Professions School Skillfactory, in collaboration with the dating service Mamba, and was shared with socialbites.ca.
The emphasis among women tends to be on the prospective groom’s field of study. Meanwhile, men often place greater weight on factors like salary, stability, and career prospects. Yet the opposite appears true when looking at men’s views on the profession itself, where the future importance of IT is not as strongly felt.
According to the researchers, the strongest driver behind Russian women’s desire for an IT-smart partner is the labor market demand for IT professionals, cited by 61 percent of respondents. More than half of those surveyed appreciate the ability of IT workers to work remotely from virtually anywhere, and roughly one in ten are attracted by frequent travel that often comes with these roles, the study notes.
Aspects highlighted by the participants include admiration for IT professionals’ problem-solving abilities, their ease with technology, and a certain cool-headed wisdom that comes from technical training. A contrasting trait observed in men is a tendency toward isolation and domestic routines, which some respondents perceive as less compatible with the dynamic, globally mobile lifestyle associated with IT careers.
Additionally, the survey found that 10 percent of Russian women already know girlfriends who are married to IT specialists. Researchers suggest that such relationships can attract attention and sometimes envy among peers, particularly because couples in these arrangements often travel and live in different countries fairly regularly.
Former IT workers described the main advantages of employment within Russian companies, underscoring factors that influence broader perceptions of the IT field among potential partners and communities across Russia.
