Summary:
Ainhoa enters the world under extraordinary circumstances in La Paz, Bolivia. Her mother, Amanda, loses her life in a vigilante attack, and Ainhoa arrives into a world marked by upheaval and resilience. The child grows up amid the rhythms of Cuba, where family stories mingle with the quiet persistence of daily life. In 1988, at the age of 21, Ainhoa begins a bold journey that leads her across oceans and borders to the Basque Country, a place that bears the history of her father, Manex. This pilgrimage is not only a search for roots but a test of identity, an exploration of lineage that spans continents and conflicts.
As the years unfold, Ainhoa crosses paths with people who will shape her fate in unexpected ways. A determined journalist named Josune becomes a key ally, drawn to uncovering truth in turbulent times. Josune runs with a tight circle, where loyalty is earned rather than offered freely, and danger frequently shadows their steps. When tragedy strikes again, with Josune’s partner succumbing to a heroin overdose, the two women choose to continue their shared voyage rather than retreat. Their journey stretches from the war-torn corridors of Lebanon to the war-torn streets of Afghanistan, finally landing in the bustling harbor districts of Marseille. The pair navigates a world layered with risk, forged alliances, and whispered agendas that bind the drug trade to political schemes.
These years align with the late stages of the Cold War, a time when power operates in shadows and the lines between crime and governance blur. Ainhoa and Josune, bound by mutual resolve, dive into a shadow economy connected to clandestine networks. They witness how criminal routes evolve with political shifts, how money, influence, and corruption travel hand in hand, and how individuals can become entangled in a web that seems to tighten with every new revelation. The story moves with a documentary pulse, turning on moments of quiet observation and sudden, wrenching actions that reveal the human cost of global networks.
Their odyssey is not merely a chase for survival. It is a search for meaning in a world where loyalties shift and truth is a moving target. The film captures not only the peril and pace of their pursuit but also the moments of grace that surface when people choose to stand up for one another. Ainhoa and Josune discover that courage can take many forms: the courage to walk away from danger, the courage to confront it, and the courage to keep asking questions even when the answers are hard to bear. Across deserts of memory and cities brimming with memory, they confront memories of family, betrayal, and the possibility of redemption under pressure.
The narrative unfolds with a steady cadence that mirrors long journeys. It emphasizes character over spectacle while never losing sight of the stakes at hand. The story presents a vivid portrait of cities, landscapes, and people who inhabit a world where survival depends on resourcefulness, trust, and a readiness to adapt to shifting currents. In the end, the film invites viewers to reflect on how history continues to echo through personal lives, shaping choices and destinies long after the journey ends.
