Beguinas: a new period drama by Atresmedia

The production sampler begins with the formalization of the cast for Beguinas as filming gets underway in the coming weeks. The ensemble includes Bea Segura, Jaime Olías, Silma López, Ella Kweku, Melani Olivares, Lucía Caraballo, Meritxell Calvo, Laura Galán, Ignacio Montes, Antonio Durán Morris, Jonás Berami, Javier Beltrán, Carmen Esteban, Cristina Gelabet, Elisabet and others who join Amaia Aberasturi and Yon Gonzalez in leading roles for this fresh historical series from the San Sebastián de los Reyes group. The cast will bring to life the early modern world where young people face social constraints while pursuing love and personal truth. The shoot locations span Madrid and Segovia.

The key actors will accompany Amaia Aberasturi and Yon Gonzalez, who portray two young protagonists navigating the rigid social codes of a period marked by tradition and expectation. Their journey follows Lucía de Avellaneda and Telmo Medina as they confront the pressures of their era, choosing courage over conformity even when the path is fraught with risk and sacrifice for love in a setting that seldom forgives deviation.

“Starting” will unfold across ten episodes, each about fifty minutes long, and will trace the hidden histories of remarkable women who left a lasting mark on a community long weighed down by norms. The series draws inspiration from Beguines, a movement dating back to the 13th century in which women formed communities that pursued an alternative life beyond marriage and the church. While Beguines devoted themselves to contemplation, they also engaged in acts of service through craft, teaching, and nursing, contributing to the common good while asserting independence. Their networks provided spaces of connection and freedom, even as authorities questioned their very existence.

Produced by Atresmedia Televisión in collaboration with Buendía Estudios, the project is guided by executive producers Montse García, Sonia Martínez, and Amparo Miralles. The fiction is brought to life under the direction of Rómulo Aguillaume and Claudia Pinto, with a script team led by Irene Rodríguez, Esther Morales, Silvia Arribas, and Virginia Llera. Production management is handled by Michael’s Martha, while Ivan and Alex Garcia serve as cinematography leads and Jorge De Soto oversees art direction. Costume, makeup, and hair are coordinated by Booby Escobar and a dedicated team, with Marilo Serrano and Fermín Galán contributing to key production roles. John León takes charge of casting to assemble a compelling ensemble.

This project marks Atresmedia’s new period drama Beguinas

Set in Segovia in the year 1559, Lucía de Avellaneda celebrates her engagement to the Marqués de Peñarrosa, a union arranged to strengthen the family’s standing and finances. The festivities are interrupted when a woman arrives with a letter claiming to be the fiancé’s mother, seeking help as he lies near death. This revelation disrupts the celebration and sets Lucía on a path toward new possibilities. She already lives independently with a circle of women who challenge traditional religious life, choosing to define their own terms of belonging beyond the church’s strictures.

As the story unfolds, Lucía encounters a world newly opened to her. She finds herself drawn to a love that is pure and irresistible yet forbidden, a choice that tests her loyalties and her future. The romance becomes a beacon of courage, especially as Telmo Medina—a Jewish man who must hide his beliefs and past—offers a path for faithful devotion and personal risk. The series follows their struggle as they navigate love against a backdrop of social and religious expectations that seek to police every move.
