There are movies that work, among other things, because they show the world a new face that fits the character portrayed like a glove. ‘The 400 Blows’ would not have been the same without Jean-Pierre Léaud. So is ‘The Spirit of the Hive’ without the excited look of the girl Ana Torrent, or ‘A Woman is a Woman’ without the radiant presence of Anna Karina. The same thing happens in ‘Andrea’s Love’: without its teenage and debutant protagonist, Lupe Mateo Barredo, Manuel Martín Cuenca’s film would be different. A young, inexperienced face that expresses many things. A mixture of innocence and some maturity.. It fills the screen, thus minimizing shortcomings and highlighting achievements. And it allows its director (‘Caníbal’, ‘Author’, ‘Girl’) to change his style significantly.
‘Andrea’s love’ is an instructive movie: A young girl must take care of her younger siblings, take care of her mother, and call her father. She wants to know you and wants you to take responsibility she. Andrea, Lupe doesn’t understand why her father abandoned them and literally abandoned her and her siblings. And her particular journey, worthy of Homer’s even though it is on a small scale and through the streets of Cádiz, is an obstacle course, as she too does not understand her mother and discovers the selfishness of others pitted against her own desire for truth and, simply, a little tenderness.
