Moisturizing cosmetics containing hyaluronic acid can damage the skin under certain conditions. Dermatocosmetologist, head of the SKINCOUTURE company Lyubov Stolina told socialbites.ca about this.
According to the doctor, most moisturizing creams contain large molecular hyaluronic acid, which is always on the surface of the skin because it cannot penetrate the deeper layers of the epidermis.
“If we are in places with high humidity, everything is not so bad because hyaluronic acid takes moisture from the environment. In dry air or low humidity, the situation is completely different: Hyaluronic acid with a large molecular size can draw moisture even from the skin, causing additional dryness,” explained Stolina.
The expert added that applying a cream containing hyaluronic acid before going out in the cold season is also harmful.
“This is when large molecular acids retain moisture on the skin surface, which, together with cool, dry air, has a detrimental effect,” he noted.
According to Stolina, it is worth using products containing both large molecular and low molecular hyaluronic acid to moisturize the skin.
“Working in synergy, they actively retain moisture in the skin, as if they were “locking in” moisture. And the best is to restore the barrier function of the epidermis. Moisture leaves the skin only when the protective barriers are broken and can no longer retain water,” concluded the dermatocosmetologist.
