Physically healthy women under stress can develop psychological infertility. This was told to socialbites.ca by Anna Mgoyan, reproductive specialist of the Fomin Clinic.

“Yes, infertility can have psychological causes! For example, psychological distress. If a woman suffers from depression or anxiety, these conditions affect her emotions and subsequently the process of conception, ”explained the doctor.

According to the reproductive specialist, factors that lead to psychological infertility include unsuccessful childbearing attempts, past psychiatric illnesses, arguments with a partner, problems in sexual life, and deterioration of relationships with loved ones.

“If a woman has even one of these problems, she may experience worsening of existing conditions such as endometriosis or ovarian failure. These are the diseases that most often lead to infertility,” explained Mgoyan.

The doctor added that depression triggers mechanisms in the body that prevent conception.

“The level of prolactin in the blood rises, the connections between the pituitary, hypothalamus and adrenal glands are disturbed, the thyroid gland begins to work worse, immunity decreases, which negatively affects reproductive function,” said the reproductive specialist.

He stated that a psychotherapist would help identify the link between psychological state and the ability to conceive.
