Injuries from improper use of electric scooters are so common nowadays that we can talk about a kind of epidemic. This was reported to socialbites.ca by the traumatologist-orthopedist of the federal network of multidisciplinary medical centers “Clinic Fomin” Inna Razdobudko.
“As a professional orthopedic traumatologist, I can say that injuries related to electric transportation have become a new epidemic in orthopedics,” said Inna Razdobudko.
The traumatologist noted that when falling at a speed of 20 km / h there is a risk of fractures of the spine and pelvic bones.
“Such injuries often occur when scooters collide with pedestrians. Depending on the force of the crash or fall, both arms and legs are damaged, as well as the head, spine and pelvis. In severe cases, ruptures of internal organs such as the liver and spleen are possible, ”explained the orthopedic traumatologist.
He noted that riding an electric scooter with children is particularly dangerous because they face neck and head injuries when they fall, as well as broken teeth and broken jaws.
If the scooter collides with a pedestrian, the latter, according to the doctor, is at risk of damage to the lower extremities – especially a fracture of the upper third of the thigh – this is especially dangerous for older people.
“A very unpleasant injury is damage and sprains of the ligaments, because the healing process is quite complex and long,” added Inna Razdobudko.
He urged not to neglect safety rules when using electric scooters – do not drive two or three people in the same vehicle, do not drive in high heels, and also avoid electric scooters while intoxicated.
