Stylist Olga Kim told socialbites.ca that for everyday looks, Russian girls should choose small, plain kokoshniks. Huge, beaded headdresses would be ridiculous, she said.
“If you want to use it in an everyday look and add a Russian national touch, then a small and simple kokoshnik is an option that will fit into everyday looks. Because a giant one that imitates old Russian and embroidered kokoshniks will look a little ridiculous with jeans, which is a shame. They are used in national costumes and on holidays,” he said.
For a modern look, choose a kokoshnik made from different fabrics, with prints or embellishments, according to Kim.
“You can choose more modern options, for example, denim kokoshnik with a denim lining or leopard print. It will be interesting to combine this kokoshnik with sneakers or leopard print jeans. It will look interesting and stylish. For example, I saw kokoshniks stylized in rock style on sale. They are covered with black eco-leather, have holes and chains. It can also look interesting, you can add a skirt or eco-leather dress to it to maintain the overall style,” she concluded.
August 19 is Kokoshnik Day. The name of this ancient headdress comes from the Old Russian word “kokosh” – chicken. It is believed that kokoshniks served as amulets and symbolized fertility.
