Benjamin Paget trying to turn a chapel into a home was fined £2,400 for felling two ‘historic’ yew trees in Leicestershire. writes about it Mirror.
A local resident noticed Paget cutting down iconic trees and reported the matter to city council. With the support of Leicestershire County Council, the 41-year-old was investigated and eventually charged with a crime. He pleaded guilty in Leicester Magistrates Court.
A huge bill was incurred by the property owner for cutting down trees without permission. The trees were the “original historic feature” of the chapel located in the conservation area. Trees are thought to make an important contribution to the character of the area.
The judges ordered Paget to pay a fine of £500 per tree plus £400 and costs £1,000.
Following the verdict, Regional Climate Officer Alison Freer said: “We are pleased with the outcome of this successful prosecution. We take implementation issues very seriously as they affect the region, the natural environment and the history of the region.”
