The Fierce Rewards, presented with critical acclaim from private critics, will return to Zaragoza following last year’s successful premiere. The ceremony marks the tenth anniversary of the event and will take place on Saturday, January 28, in the Aragon capital. The venue remains a versatile hall that suits the awards’ relaxed format. This plan was announced by the president of the Spanish Association of Cinematographic Correspondents during the San Sebastian Film Festival, with Battle of Mary also highlighted alongside Zaragoza’s deputy mayor, Sara Fernández.

For a second consecutive year, the city will host the main stars of Spanish cinema at a premiere produced in 2021, according to a study commissioned by the consulate. The impact on Zaragoza’s image is estimated at 8 million euros.

Following the renewal of the agreement between AICE and the Zaragoza City Council, the Aragonese capital will again host the gala. An ambitious program of films, series, and exhibitions is planned for the coming months, with the first details expected to be announced around the tenth anniversary of the Feroz Awards.

“Cultural and critical standards remain very high, elevating not only the Feroz awards but every session and filmmakers’ gathering,” confirms IAEC president María Guerra. “Zaragoza represents a dynamic city open to multidisciplinary dialogue offered by cinema. In ten years of the Feroz awards, the audiovisual sector has grown, and this journey has seen many films and TV series travel alongside the city, strengthening its public relations.” “Zaragoza is the best possible setting for this celebration,” Guerra added.

“Zaragoza is a welcoming, friendly, and open city, so we will again host the industry with warmth and openness,” stated Deputy Mayor Sara Fernández.

For Fernández, the deputy mayor of Zaragoza, hosting the Feroz Awards again is a privilege that builds on the success of the previous edition. She noted that all parallel programs celebrated in the summer and Campus La Inmortal fortify the exchange between cinema professionals and the public. “The audiovisual sector is culture and economy,” she said, recalling that the media’s influence on Zaragoza’s image and international projection was valued at 8.24 million euros in the prior edition. “Zaragoza is a welcoming, friendly, and open city, so we will greet the industry once more with affection.” She extended a warm invitation to IAEC members and visitors who want to share pride in audiovisual culture with the city.

Feroz Zinemaldia Award 2022

In the same address, Laura Mora’s Kings of the World received the 2022 Feroz Zinemaldia Award, according to members of the Association of Cinematographic Correspondents of Spain (AICE), recognizing the best film in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival.

The Feroz presence last year extended beyond the gala itself, with a broad program running from October through January that filled Zaragoza with cinema. This year is set to continue the trend, featuring film and series screenings with the participation of their creative teams, guest authors, and a sequence of round-table discussions, creating a calendar open to the people of Zaragoza.

Since its inception in 2014, the Feroz awards have mostly taken place in Madrid, except for 2019 when they were held in Bilbao and last year in Zaragoza. In 2021, the multipurpose room hosted a red carpet event that allowed the public to meet actors and actresses up close.

Forques

The city has hosted other notable Spanish cinema events recently, including the Forqué awards, traditionally associated with the manufacturers, which took place in Zaragoza in 2018 and 2019. The Aragon Government supported the event at the Expo Convention Palace, underscoring the administration’s commitment to presenting the awards more than once.

One long-standing ambition has been to bring a Goya premiere to Zaragoza. Deputy Mayor Sara Fernández noted last year that the current administration maintains contacts with the film academy, though progress hinges on overcoming a significant financial barrier, estimated at not less than two million euros.
