Three films compete for the top prizes at the Feroz Awards as nominations were unveiled recently. Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s As Bestas, Isabel Peña and Zaragoza-born writer, the film Alcarràs from Carla Simón, and Five Little Wolves from Alauda Ruiz de Azúa lead the charge as the strongest contenders for best dramatic film, best directing, and best screenplay. The host city of Zaragoza’s Pablo Gargallo Museum becomes a focal point as industry figures gather to celebrate a slate that showcases the breadth of Spanish cinema.

On his behalf, Madre from Aragon Pilar Palomero was absent from the best picture and best screenplay lists, instead securing three nominations: best director, best lead actor for Carla Quílez, and best supporting actress for Ángela Cervantes. The field remains robust with several Aragonese talents appearing in major categories and a handful of nominations that highlight the region’s growing influence in contemporary Spanish productions.

Other Aragonese candidates include Isabel Peña for her work on the series Apagón, Jorge Fuembuena for best poster for Cerdita, and Carla Pérez de Albeniz for best dramatic series for Rapa, in which she serves as a producer. The lineup was announced by Mina El Hammani and Carlos Cuevas, with AICE president María Guerra and Zaragoza deputy mayor Sara Fernández in attendance to reveal the nominees.

The Feroz Awards ceremony is set to take place at the Istanbul multipurpose room Zaragoza Auditorium on January 28. It is already known that Pedro Almodóvar will receive the Feroz of Honor during the gala, marking a second consecutive visit of the industry’s leading figures to Zaragoza. The event is expected to generate substantial media attention and has been cited in a municipality-commissioned study as contributing a notable 8 million euros to the city’s image.

“It’s a pleasure to return to Zaragoza to celebrate the Feroz Awards,” said María Guerra, president of the Spanish Association of Cinematographic Journalists, emphasizing Zaragoza as a vibrant city that invites multidisciplinary dialogue through cinema. Over the past decade, the Feroz Awards have helped the audiovisual sector flourish, with the city serving as a dynamic stage for the convergence of films and television series.
