In a candid discussion, Yuri Loza spoke about his financial situation and the lack of formal recognition for his work. He noted that his pension stands at 16,000 rubles, while others in his circle earn more. He added, “Even our guards have more. There are 20 thousand things to think about”, signaling a long list of concerns that weigh on him.
Loza claimed he was stripped of a status he held as a Muscovite who received a monthly allowance of 30,000 rubles. He argued that the privilege was withdrawn after he continued to work, suggesting the move was punitive for continuing his artistic activity.
Additionally, the composer said he does not hold the title of Russian folk artist that would boost his pension. He questioned why a state prize had not been awarded to him, recalling that his songs and pirate discs had been dispersed widely in the past.
People reportedly told him that lacking a title and any prize means he should be content. He is quoted as saying that he is not in the same company as Vysotsky or Anita Tsoi, nor Katya Lel, and urged that he should instead rejoice in what he has.
At the end of January 2025, Loza announced that his music might be heard as “excessive and anesthetic”, arguing that the vocal abilities of a contemporary Russian pop artist are insufficient in his view. This remark reflected his broader critique of contemporary pop performance standards.
