Villena is Music returns for its fifth edition in Alto Vinalopó

Villena is Music (VEM) is back with its fifth edition, launching today in the town of Alto Vinalopó. The festival brings together 62 groups and 1500 musicians who will perform across 10 venues set throughout the squares and streets of Villena on June 17 and 18. After years of pandemic disruption, this open-air event stands out as the province’s most participatory music celebration, offering 27 hours of concerts across public spaces for audiences of all tastes and ages.

The new edition traditionally begins on Friday with a welcoming statement from the Municipal Music Band, marking its 100th anniversary this year. The opening act is scheduled for 19:30 at Plaza del Teatro Chapi, kicking off the party. This Friday also features a tribute to the DJ figure, recognizing their decades-long influence as musical creators in subgenres and culture. As part of VEM, a gathering called “Club VEM DJ” will host 10 DJs from diverse styles, followed by a large meeting at 11:45 in Plaza de Toros de Villena on Friday. Among the participants are DJ Josele Calabuig, Mónika Rendón, DJ Josele, Llopis, DJayme, DJ Álvaro Sevilla, Mutant Sisters, Carlos Alpa, DJ Tiri, and DJ Camáñez, each presenting their unique approach to listening and performing music in different formats and contexts.

“VEM is the home for anyone who creates, performs, broadcasts, promotes, or simply enjoys music,” said Pepe Ayelo, coordinator of the Culture House and organizer of the event. “In recent years, especially since the 1990s, the role of DJs has grown significantly. VEM aims to demonstrate the social and cultural value of these music lovers by highlighting their ability to reinterpret music and craft new formats.”

Among the free activities, a grand parade of bands is planned for Saturday afternoon, traveling from Plaza del Rollo to the front of the Chapi Theatre as part of the Municipal Band tribute.

VEM closes on Saturday, June 18, at 20:30 with a live karaoke band session led by Juanjo Reig, presented as a collaboration with Thousand Pesetas Jazz Club. The event invites active participation from the public and other invited musicians.

The fifth edition of VEM includes the inaugural VEM Photography Award, organized in partnership with the Villena Cuéntame collective, as well as several prize recognitions with cash awards. Winners may receive funds to support future performances at other festivals, including Leyenda del Rock and Lagartija Rojo.

This edition of VEM carries a charitable dimension as well, with proceeds from merchandise sales directed to the Sanmente Foundation, which supports people facing mental health challenges. The festival’s leadership expressed gratitude to the community for embracing the event and encouraged residents and visitors from across the province to enjoy the performances at every show.
